Problem
Danielle Die Cutting Products in Paterson, NJ manufactures their own steel rule dies and serves north Jersey and New York’s needs for die cut packages, displays, labels, etc. Customers turn to Danielle Die Cutting because the company is known for its ability to die cut tough products that other companies can’t or won’t cut. With a reputation for challenging die cutting jobs, Danielle Die Cutting needed a press that could not only meet its demand for high tonnage, but would sustain heavy loads without continuous service or replacement costs.
Solution
Danielle Die Cutting needed a press to replace one of their many 40-plus-year-old Thomsons. Knowing that the newer Thomson model, the Thomson American, would not offer the tonnage needed to endure years of heavy loads, and that his old-style Thomson was no longer available, Danielle Die began investigating other options. To purchase a quality press, he knew that he would have to do his homework on foreign manufacturers because many used recycled steel, which often fails under heavy loads or they cut corners on components that easily wear.
Danny DiBetitto, President of Danielle Die Cutting, asked his friends at Globe Die Cutting for suggestions. Globe Die Cutting owns the Weidhaas IT&M 28x41 press, a former version of the Crest Clamshell. When DiBetitto learned about the Weidhaas reputation of building high-tonnage, quality clamshells, he knew that he had found a company he could trust with his heavy-tonnage needs. DiBetitto called the Weidhaas Group to discuss the new Crest model, and ultimately purchased the Crest 22x28, which was installed in March 2004.
Results
DiBetitto can cut almost anything on his Crest. “The Crest will handle any material I’ve tried on it; in fact, it cuts materials that many people can’t run on their Thomsons,” said DiBetitto. Danielle Die Cutting has found that their little Crest 22x28 actually has more cutting power than a Thomson 28x41. DiBetitto could not cut a customer’s job on a Thomson 28x41, but when he tried it on his Crest, he cut it without any difficulty.
Many companies want to cut smaller sheet sizes, and believe they need a larger press to obtain the tonnage. The Weidhaases designed the Crest 22x28 with the same flywheel and tonnage as their 30x43 and 33x47, which provides customers 135 working tons, even in the smaller format. Danielle Die Cutting found that the Crest 22x28 saves time because a high-tonnage job, which would have run on a larger press, now requires the operator to move less to take the sheet in and out of the press. The smaller press has also saved floor space.
With many operators running a press, often someone forgets to add grease or oil. While DiBetitto’s old-style Thomson presses require daily grease and oil, the Crest Clamshell’s automatic grease and oiling system saves Danielle Die Cutting both time and headaches. The Crest automatically releases the appropriate amount of grease and oil, only requiring an occasional refill of the reservoir. Danielle Die Cutting also likes the open-dwell feature, which can be set to accommodate different operator speeds, and the impression throw off, which reduces wasted material.
